The original logo, used from to , was designed by studio publicist Howard Dietz. Dietz said he decided to use a lion as the company's mascot as a tribute to his alma mater Columbia University, whose athletic teams are called The Lions. The lion's roar was inspired by Columbia's fight song, "Roar, Lion, Roar".
The first lion to roar was named Jackie in , in front of the film White Shadows in the South Seas. Jackie was also the lion in front of the Wizard of Oz. This change has been in the works for a while. MGM originally planned to debut its new CG mascot in the latest James Bond film, but when No Time to Die was delayed from to due to the coronavirus pandemic, so was Leo's first roar from the uncanny valley.
At a glance, the revamped logo is almost identical to the version MGM has been using for the past 64 years. Leo the lion's CG replacement has the same roar, and looks almost identical to his predecessor. To add dimension, Shine modeled a close up of Leo's eye creating an element to pull back through for a dramatic reveal of the lion, laurels and filmstrip. All the elements of the logo were re-built in 3-D, and then placed on different planes to add dimensional layers and drama.
Leo roars and the company name is brought in from above to center the top screen, which completes the logo sequence. MGM's website address was removed, as MGM is no longer as of a self-distribution entity, but rather a production company.
