Hello Lovepeppard, Ok - I am going to jump in and give you a number - this is a reckless speculation - but it is something So - there is a 2 mph current moving south - in general there are kelp beds off of La Jolla - that this dude would get tangled in S Jones - Try using Google Earth on your computer.

You can draw a line between 2 locations and find out the nm distance. I tried to do this for you but google earth won't load for me Good luck. Important to stay away during the day, take special care at night or low visibility. Tis what it is. Kelp Beds. That fishing chart of the Pt Loma kelp beds is spot on. I sail often out and around them to go up to Mariners Cove in Mission, or just out for a long ocean day sail. Buoy 3 is always my turning point to miss most of it. Still have to dodge the occasional patty. First time coming out of the bay I made the mistake of turning north right after marker 5. I think from Ballast Point to CV marina is 2 hours and the buoys are well lit. The only hassle is that neither marina in CV is well lit at night so if you're not familiar with your slip, finding it could be tricky. This is the exact question I've been wondering about.
